Posted by admin on Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

From Jesse Hunter, JDTS student blogger:
It’s strange to be sitting in our Winnipeg living room yet again. The month in Thailand and ten days in Vancouver were packed with a wide variety and great quantity of experience, however, it feels like it slipped through our hands and into the past in a heartbeat. The pictures and [...]

Justice Discipleship Training School

Justice Discipleship Training School
September 27th 2010- February 25th 2011

(include Christmas break)

“What does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” -Micah 6:8

Our Justice Discipleship Training School (DTS) is a five month intensive in spiritual and missional formation. The first three months concentrates on engaging students in a holistic discipleship experience that challenges the mind, heart and body in a praxis oriented program. Offered in the heart of Winnipeg’s West End, students will integrate in one of the city’s most culturally diverse, yet poor neighbourhoods. Our emphasis on justice means that as part of the community, students will engage the realities of poverty, injustice, racism and much more, all the while have the opportunity to respond in exciting new ways.

With a strong emphasis on hands on training, every fourth week of the lecture phase will be an intensive local outreach where students will get to be involved in grass-roots urban/justice ministries in the city.  This is will allow students to experience and engage the realities of urban missions during the training phase, making the most of what they are learning.

After a short Christmas break, the students return for the outreach & service phase of the school.  This phase is an international, cross-cultural missions service outreach, where students will begin to explore the implication of what they have learned beyond simple application. Again with an emphasis on justice, students will participate in “preaching the Gospel” with their whole selves- in word and deed. Our first school served in restoring the tsunami devastated community of the famous Phi Phi Island in southern Thailand, while two other schools served in Uganda.  Our most recent school served among displaced people in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as well as the poor displaced by the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.

The upcoming 2010 JDTS will be sending teams to Haiti, share the love of God through serving alongside the people after the devastation of the earthquake.  Should the school be large enough, we will also be sending a secondary team back to Thailand.  Details still pending.

The cost of the Lecture Phase for a single person in $3500 Canadian Dollars, plus a $50, non-refundable registration fee. The cost of the Outreach Phase will be an additional $3500 - $4000 Canadian Dollars, depending on flight & location expenses. This will cover airfare, applicable taxes, cancellation insurance, ground transportation, living expenses, etc.  Personal expenses (i.e. laundry, visa costs, etc.) are the applicants responsibility. We encourage applicants to work with their church community in fund raising prior and during DTS, believing that God will provide for you to meet these financial requirements. Prices may change without notice, so please contact us for more information. Please note that a week will be given during the school for students to return home for Christmas if they so choose.

Lecture Phase   = $3500 CDN
Outreach Phase = $3500-$4000 CDN
TOTAL COST     = $7000-$7500 CDN

*Please note the $50 CDN registration fee is not listed.
