Summer Program Update

Posted by admin on Thursday, August 12th, 2010

It seems like such a short amount of time since our blog title was “Mission Adventures Summer Staff Needed”, especially considering it’s already been several weeks since we said goodbye to our summer staff after an extremely full summer!  That being said, a summary will have to suffice.  First, a bit about our amazing summer [...]

Doing Justice & Missional Formation

Posted by admin on Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Recently, several people have mentioned our frequent use of Micah 6:8 in our materials.  They wondered if it was just because it was a popular verse on justice or if we had really thought through what it means to us.  It is a good question, because it is a very significant and formational verse for [...]

Justice DTS 2009/2010 – Students, Staff & Speakers

As the Justice Discipleship Training School for 2009/2010 gets close to starting, check out our students (so far), as well as our exciting line up of speaker.

Students:

Janelle Laybolt

janelle-2
Hello, my name is Janelle Laybolt. I am 18 years old, born in Inuvik N.W.T so I am a full blown aboriginal Canadian, but now I’m from Southwest Saskatchewan. Represent. Anyways, I enjoy music, camping, video editing, driving my totally awesome sunfire (standard), Pixar movies, and Jesus. I’m a bit shy at first, but I’m ready to be stretched. I expect to meet different people from different places and unite under His Name. I’m excited to grow in my faith, and be encouraged by what’s to come! “You, dear children, are from God and have overcome them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.” (1 John 4:4)

Jenny Forbes

jenny-2
My name is Jenny Forbes, I am 23 years old and I am from Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. I have recently graduated from art school and am currently working at a Gaelic primary school. Some of my favourite things to do are listening to live music, painting, climbing hills, traveling to new places, eating banana loaf and crocheting the odd winter hat. I’m not entirely sure what to expect from this DTS, however I am excited about being able to hang out, discuss and learn more about who God is with other Christians. I can only imagine that, through such an experience, God will continue to open up my eyes, provide new challenges and bring further growth to my life.

Kathryn Hodge

kathryn
Kathryn Hodge is my name, and I don’t have any nicknames so its just Kathryn. I am most recently from North Carolina, but I would say that my hometown is Modesto, California. I am 20 years old and was born and raised in the United States. I’m pretty basic because I love to listen to music, watch movies, play games, and read books. At the same time I’m kind of eccentric with what I like to watch, play, and read so that’s kind of different. What am I expecting from this DTS? I would have to say that I’m expecting this experience to be challenging but remarkable at the same time.

Jesse Hunter

jesse
My name is Jesse and I am from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I love a lot of different things in this world, and am curious about nearly everything. I try and experience everything through a lens of spirituality, and Jesus Christ in general, so most of my passions center around his Kingdom. I love music and language, and find my self connecting to the raw properties of God through those mediums. I know I am just scraping the surface of my salvation, and the powers of prayer, and am excited to have time to dwell in these things daily while at YWAM. I can’t wait to be in community with people I would not have hand selected to spend time with, and I trust that God will work through all his diverse children to show himself more clearly to each one. I am a hopeless sinner, and mercy is the only thing keeping me focused on eternity. One thing I want to take home from YWAM is a revelation of the depths of his love for us, so that I can reflect the light to the people I forge bonds with while I walk this earth.

Ashley Mitchell

ashley

Hello, my name is Ashley Mitchell. I’m 18 years old I was born in Saskatoon, SK and raised in the small village of Beechy, SK. I really enjoy playing sports such as volleyball, basketball, track, snowboarding and paintball. I also enjoy spending time with my family and friends, music and doing crazy stuff. I’ve worked at a bible camp for 4 years, and so I have a huge heart for reaching out, and working with kids. I love getting to know new people, and so I am really excited for this opportunity to meet and get to know everyone involved in this training. I can’t wait to travel and share God’s word with people across the world. As well, I am very excited to grow in my relationship with God, as I go to where He is leading me.

Laura Jayes

laura

Hello my name is Laura Jayes. I just turned 24 in August. I was born in Hamilton, Ontario and moved to Red Deer, Alberta at  a young age. I am a shy person, with a fun loving side. I enjoy spending time with my dogs, bike riding, swimming, and running.
I am looking forward to developing friendships with everyone at YWAM and together learning more about God and growing in faith. I want to dedicate my life to serving God and am willing to go wherever He leads me. I am hoping that God will direct me through my studies and my experiences at YWAM.

Speakers:

Phil Cunningham – Justice

phil
I am Phil. I am a follower of Jesus, husband of Amy, father of Emma and Abby, and son of Alan and Ann. I was born in Belfast N. Ireland, but grew up in Winnipeg – Transcona, to be exact. When I was 9 I remember being at a mission conference and clearly knowing I was going to be in missions for life. 11 years later I left Winnipeg for YWAM in LA never to return. I served in LA with YWAM from 93 till 99, and in 99 my family moved to Seattle where we along with 2 other couples started YWAM Seattle. Now our family is living in San Diego where we, along with another couple are setting up international outreaches for Mission Adventures. I love to travel and teach, but most of all I love to do things with people who are going the same direction as me, it is just way more fun and cool stuff happens. I also love Amy my wife of 11 years and our daughters (Emma 7, Abby 3). I also really like going to see old 80′s hair metal bands on their reunion concerts. Thanks.
Chris Whitler – Evangelism

whitler-family
Chris is from the United States and is ok with that but feels Canadian at heart. It’s not just because Tim Horton’s is so good – he also lived and worked in Ontario for 8 years with YWAM. He and his lovely wife Amie (who is a beautiful dancer but this isn’t about her now is it?) have 3 awesome kids, two of which are Canadians. What the youngest lacks in Canadian-ness she makes up for in cute.
Chris loves a good book and a good movie, and tends toward being a bit of a fantasy geek. He helped to pioneer YWAM in Modesto, California in 2001 and has been working there ever since. He hopes his week with the Winnipeg DTS will help unpack that mysterious, fearful feeling we get when someone says “evangelism”. He’ll probably tell lots of stories and you’ll probably play a few silly games, but you will definitely have some laughs together and if you’re good, he might just cook for you.
Jack McNeill – Global Missions

jack

Jack McNeill has been married for 41 years (making him a veteran for sure) and has four daughters, three sons in law, and seven grandchildren. He is a 33 year veteran of YWAM. He loves to learn, bicycle, canoe, run, build things out of wood, and weld. He is illiterate in several languages. His special mission interest is the former Soviet Union. The course will give tools for mission work in a variety of cultural and urban/rural settings.

Chad Chomlack – Prayer & Worship

chad
My name is Chad Chomlack, and I was born in Vancouver, BC, Canada.  I live in Whistler where I have the privilege to help see God’s Kingdom a reality here.  I am married to Anastasia Chomlack for 9 years and have two awesome boys, Jadyn and Caleb.  I am looking forward to our week together to create a landscape of life in relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit through prayer and worship.  Hobbies/interests: reading, my boys, my wife, sideway sports, golf, photography.

Randy Parizeau – Conversations on Leadership

randy-the-real-one

Randy Parizeau has served with Youth With A Mission since 1984. He lives in Vancouver with his wife Rita and their 4 children. He is currently leading YWAM Nexia³ – a ministry of YWAM Canada that is focused on missions mobilization, leadership development, and pioneering initiatives. He also serves on a number of YWAM leadership teams locally, nationally, and internationally.

Jamie Arpin-Ricci – Missional Community

jamie
Jamie Arpin-Ricci, co-founder/director of YWAM Urban Ministries Winnipeg, has been with YWAM since 1994. In addition to serving throughout Canada in various ministry capacities, he is a passionate writer, including his first book “Looking Forward: Facing the Future of Christian Leadership”, his blog www.missional.ca, and other free lance projects. He is pastor of Little Flowers Community, an inner city church partnership between YWAM & Mennonite Church Manitoba.

Kara T. – Relationships

kara-for-dts-08
Kara joined Youth With A Mission full-time to pioneer a new work in Liverpool, England after completing a DTS in 1984. After that time she returned home to the west coast of British Columbia, married a pastor with the Mennonite Brethren Conference, and worked alongside him until his death in 1990. Following a youth pastoral internship in Washington State, she once again joined YWAM in Amsterdam, Holland in 1992. She has been in Las Vegas since 1996, where she and her husband Richard have pioneered the ministry of training, mercy ministry, and evangelism in the city. She loves reading, tackling ridiculously large home improvement projects, and crocheting beanies and chihuahua coats. She is presently a full-time student in the Marriage and Family Therapy Masters Program at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She hopes our week will bring fun, frank, and practical biblical perspective on the subject of relationships as we authentically tackle together the real issues of sexuality, wholeness and relational maturity, and maybe even find some answers to questions that perhaps up until now we haven’t been able (or have been afraid) to ask.☺

Tanya Lyons – The Nature & Character of God

tanya-lyons
Tanya Lyons met Jesus at her DTS in Turner Valley, Alberta, when she was 17 years old. She has been involved with YWAM for over 10 years, and has lived and ministered in the US, Central Asia and 20 other nations. After two years working at a shelter for homeless teenagers in Edmonton Tanya has returned to YWAM and serves as the Canadian DTS Coordinator.  Currently Tanya lives in Vancouver and is co-leading a DTS there.
